Hot To Revive Your Gas Hot Water Pilot Light
There’s nothing worse than stepping into the shower only to be hit with freezing cold water. One of the most common reasons a gas hot water system stops working is because the pilot light has gone out.
The good news is that relighting the pilot light is often a simple fix.
At Wanaka Plumbing & Gas, we help homeowners with gas hot water repairs, servicing, and pilot light issues.
What Is a Pilot Light?
The pilot light is a small flame inside your gas hot water system that ignites the main burner whenever hot water is needed.
Pilot lights can go out for a number of reasons, including strong wind, temporary gas interruptions, or worn components.
If the pilot light goes out, your hot water system won’t be able to heat water properly.
Step 1: Turn Off the Gas
Before starting, turn the gas control valve to the “off” position and wait a few minutes to allow any remaining gas to clear safely.
Step 2: Locate the Pilot Light Assembly
Find the pilot light assembly near the bottom of the hot water unit. You should see the gas control knob and pilot light area together.
Step 3: Turn the Control Knob to “Pilot”
Turn the gas control knob to the “pilot” setting. This allows gas to flow to the pilot light without activating the main burner.
Step 4: Ignite the Pilot Light
Using a long lighter or match, carefully light the pilot flame while holding down the reset button on the control knob.
Keep holding the button for around 30 seconds after the flame ignites.
Step 5: Release the Reset Button
Slowly release the reset button and check if the pilot light stays lit.
If the flame goes out, repeat the process again. Sometimes it can take a couple of attempts.
Step 6: Turn the Gas Back On
Once the pilot light stays lit, turn the control knob to the “on” position so the main burner can begin heating water normally again.
When to Call a Professional
If the pilot light won’t stay lit or keeps going out, there may be a larger issue with the gas supply or hot water system.
Gas appliances should always be handled carefully, and ongoing issues should be inspected by a qualified gas fitter.
