Hand feeling water temperature in shower

All the reasons your hot water is only warm

A cold start to the day is one thing—but expecting a hot shower and getting only lukewarm water is something else entirely. If you’ve found yourself asking why your hot water just isn’t getting properly hot, you’re definitely not the only one. At Wanaka Plumbing & Gas, it’s one of the most frequent issues we’re called about—and the causes vary more than you might think.

The upside? In most cases, there’s a clear fix. Here are some of the most common reasons your hot water isn’t reaching the temperature it should:

1. Thermostat issues
Every system uses a thermostat to manage heat levels. If it’s set too low, drifting out of calibration, or starting to fail, your water may never reach the right temperature. Sometimes it’s a simple adjustment—but if the component is faulty, it may need replacing.

2. Heating element faults (electric systems)
Electric cylinders typically rely on one or more heating elements. When one burns out, the system can still function—but won’t produce enough heat. A plumber can quickly test and swap out the faulty part.

3. Gas system inefficiencies
With gas units, issues like a weak flame, a struggling pilot light, or restricted gas flow can all reduce heating performance. Because these involve gas components, it’s important to have them checked by a qualified professional.

4. Build-up inside the tank
Minerals in the water can settle over time, forming a layer at the bottom of the tank. This build-up reduces the system’s ability to transfer heat effectively. Flushing the tank can help, but older systems may need more extensive servicing.

5. System capacity limitations
Hot water demand changes—especially if more people are using it or usage habits have shifted. If your cylinder can’t keep up, you’ll notice the temperature dropping off quickly. In these cases, upgrading to a larger or continuous flow system may be the best long-term solution.

6. Mixing valve problems
Tempering valves are designed to keep water at a safe temperature by blending hot and cold water. When they fail, they can overcompensate—leaving you with water that never quite heats up. Replacement usually resolves the issue quickly.

7. Hidden plumbing issues or leaks
Leaks or incorrect plumbing connections can cause heat loss or allow cold water to mix into the hot supply. These faults aren’t always obvious but can significantly affect water temperature.

8. Installation problems with newer systems
Even a recently installed system can underperform if something wasn’t set up correctly. Misconfigured thermostats, trapped air, or incorrect system sizing can all lead to disappointing results. A proper inspection can usually pinpoint the issue.

9. Electrical supply interruptions
Electric systems rely on consistent power. If there’s an issue like a tripped breaker or faulty wiring, the system may only heat intermittently. This not only affects performance but can also be a safety concern.

10. System wear and tear over time
No hot water system lasts forever. As components age, efficiency drops. Corrosion, worn seals, and general degradation can all prevent the system from heating water effectively. At a certain point, replacement becomes more practical than repair.

11. Cold weather impact
Wanaka’s colder months mean the water entering your system starts off much colder. That extra temperature gap can make it harder for your system to keep up—especially if it’s already under strain. Insulation and system checks can help reduce the impact.
